Kovalchuk signs with Khimik

Ilya Kovalchuk

(From "There is as yet no progress in my talks with Atlanta. It is already common news that the New York Rangers allegedly want to propose to me a contract, but these are only rumors-- why comment on them? In the meantime, I've signed an insurance contract with Khimik. On Monday I will already be training with the team in Voskresensk."

Today on Ilya Kovalchuk's web site ( there's a Soviet Sport article describing step-by-step Kovalchuk's first on-ice action today as a member of Khimik. There's also this quote from Kovalchuk: "It is no secret that I signed with Khimik only an insurance contract. As soon as my agent gets a suitable proposal from NHL, I will leave for overseas."

Word is out now that Atlanta's newest offer to Kovalchuk is $6 million per year over 3 years. I can't say if that's enough, or if it isn't. The "Rangers offer sheet" rumor that was being floated around was based on the number $7.8 million, or the maximum salary allowed.
